The assessment of this BTEC qualification is criterion-referenced and centres are required to assess the learners' evidence against published learning outcomes and assessment criteria. This gives transparency to the assessment process and provides for the establishment of national standards for each qualification.

The assessment of the BTEC qualification is at unit level and there is no overall grade foe the BTEC Higher Nationals. This allows for learners to access the qualification in a unitised approach, if this is appropriate.

The assessment is against the published learning outcomes and assessment criteria which centres are expected to make available to learners. Assessment of achievement at Merit and Distinction level should be based on the application of the generic grading criteria to the evidence presented. These grading criteria will require a qualitative improvement rather than a quantitative increase in the evidence presented.
